girl-ish
By Janessa Berlanga In my circle of friends, I have a small New Year’s tradition; I say “I have” because I’m not sure the others have really realized what I’ve been doing for the past few years, or, if they have, then they’ve simply chosen to not be active participants. Which is is cool because I started this tradition as a way for me personally to remember and be thankful for the friendships that exist in my life. What I like to do in the weeks leading up to New Year’s Eve is reflect on the moments I was able to share with each of my friends whether in person or via facetime, skype, and what-not. Then, on New Year’s Eve I tell them about my “favourite memory of the past year with (them)”, and wish them many more good times in the year to come. Usually I’ll do this with an email or facebook or text message and sometimes a few of them will respond with “I remember that, too! Happy New Year friend!” And sometimes, my message with will get lost in the flood of Happy New Year’s texts, and I won’t hear back for a while, but that doesn’t bother me so much. I don’t do this just so I could I get a text back, I do it to let my friends know that I miss them and I treasure whatever time we’ve spent together.
