By Jesse Powell My personal goal for 2014 was to do yoga every day, even if only for five minutes. Really I just wanted to be more active, but one of the things I’ve learned about myself recently is that I thrive on goals that are clearly defined. “Active” means a lot of things to me. I love to swim, but the weather in Arizona can be too chilly for that this time of year. (I know that’s hard to imagine, but once you’re so used to staying cool in temperatures as high as 118*, swimming in 60* water is not so enjoyable anymore.) I really enjoy hiking and I’m learning about trail running because that seems like the next logical step in my fitness journey. I love being outdoors and I want to run somewhere extremely scenic. I need to challenge myself with fresh workouts or I get bored, which I hear is a common thing. (c) Kiley Shuffett I would be lying if I said I managed to do yoga every day this year, but I can honestly tell you I have only missed about three weeks collectively. I am ridiculously proud of that because it means that I have accomplished my goal. I was more active. I have been practicing yoga for 5 years now but I’ve done it more this year than any other. I also managed to do some sort of physical activity other than yoga every day. Lately I’ve been doing ab and squat challenges and I’ve got to say, my legs look better than ever. I like trying new cardio workouts. My favorites are the sets that include strength training. The more I can get done in a short amount of time, the better. I am a busy woman.

By Kiley Shuffett First,, let me say this: if your goal is to build muscle, become stronger, leaner, or shape up any part of your body, being "lazy" won't get you there. You know that, I know that, we all know that! My version of a "lazy" workout is a routine done entirely while lying on the floor or in some position near the floor. My knees lock and I tire easily, what can I say? I’m certainly not a medical professional or a fitness guru, so I’ll be sharing my favorite workouts from my favorite fitness professional, Cassey Ho of Blogilates. She has hundreds of workout routines on YouTube, but for today, I chose the workouts perfect for me in the early morning or after work when my energy isn’t at it’s highest and I sure as sh*t don’t feel like jumping around my living room.
Disclaimer: Just because you are lying down or sitting, does not mean your butt won’t get handed to you. I’m here to tell you, it WILL. Also, consult with a doctor and all that jazz. And of course, DON'T DARE START THIS UNTIL CHRISTMAS IS OVER! Easy, cute, and festive manicures by a nail art novice By Christie Gleason I'm going to go ahead and preface this by saying I am NOT good at nail art. I can give myself a pretty fierce manicure but once we step into the land of teeny tiny details, my nail painting skills plummet to a zero. My hands aren't steady and more importantly, I don't have the patience to do nail art. Inevitably I make a mistake, get really mad, and just say "screw it" to the whole thing. With that being said, it is nothing short of a miracle that the holiday-themed nail art I attempted for you all came out really well. And here's the clincher- I didn't use any actual nail tools. I used my nail polishes and some toothpicks. WHAT UP!
Nail Art You Can Actually Do. 'Nuff Said. By Kiley Shuffett WARNING: lots of metallics, a little glitter, and a whole lotta jewel tones! 1. Cozy by the Fire No matter the time of year, I love this color combination and the design totally reminds me of a cozy fire! Besides that, how easy is messily swiping some polish on your nails to achieve this look? Click here for the tutorial.

Let me tell you a story about the time I decided to stop shaving. “Shaving what?” You may ask. Everything: my leg hair, my underarm hair, my down-there hair… bring on the fuzz. Contrary to popular belief, this wasn’t an impulse decision or some sort of political movement I decided to join. (Although from experience it seems that unshaven female pits are still a political statement and social “no-no” even now, in 2014.) In fact, it took me years from the time I decided I wanted to go natural to the time I actually put down the pink blades. Yes. Years. By Hannah Bennett Let’s talk about acne. So, acne/pimples/zits/tiny-pus-monsters-from-hell— whatever you want to call it— seem like they shouldn’t be such a big deal, BUT THEY ARE. Acne’s not a physically debilitating disease; you can have it your entire life and not really experience any medical consequences. It can, however, be very psychologically harmful (as if we need our own bodies to give us another reason to feel self-conscious). I’m 26 and I still am on this epic and (seemingly) never-ending struggle with my skin and whatever fresh hell it has for me to discover when I look in the mirror each morning. Maybe I’m being a little melodramatic. But sometimes no amount of concealer can help “cover up” the explosion of hormones and bacteria that has manifested itself on your face. Period. My skin was pretty flawless until my senior year of high school. I remember crying hysterically at how awful I thought my face looked that I refused to go to a family event around Christmas time, and insisted on staying at home by myself. As an adult who can no longer get away with staying home anytime my skin looks miles away from perfect, I just subject my pimpled face to whomever I come into contact with. But, I’ve also found some pretty helpful tools that have seriously subsided my acne from a daily major hurricane of shit to a milder shit storm, and only when I’m on my period. And let me tell you, that’s a major deal. |
