By Ciara LeRoy Welcome back to the Mani Museum! This week, I’m going to show you how to do a manicure in the mind-bending style of English painter, Bridget Riley. Riley is known for her highly geometric and optical illusion-esque paintings. Some of her works even produce sensations of motion when viewed because of the clever way lines and shapes are placed on the canvas. For today’s mani, I drew inspiration from her late 60’s era, during which she began to experiment with color. The hot summer around the corner my muse, I went with a bright palette of Southwest colors, including sky blue, cloud white, terra cotta, turquoise, and a little bit of gold rush. You’ll also need some tape for this effect. I happened to already have artist’s tape, but any tape will do, as long as the tack is mild (you don’t want that tape to pull up your beautiful base coat!) First, I laid down a sky blue base coat. Since the next step involves tape, let this coat dry REALLY WELL before moving on. Cut your tape into thin strips that are slightly longer than your nail bed. This will make it easier to rip off once you’re done. Run a finger over the strips a few times to make sure the edges are sealed, and you won’t have any polish “bleeds” Choose a contrasting color and paint your entire nail, to create basic stripes. Don’t remove that tape yet! Leave it on, and paint angled stripes in alternating colors, between the taped lines. Vary the widths of the stripes for even more interest. Your nail will probably look questionably messy at this point, but stay with me! Once you’re dry, SLOWLY peel off the tape. If your nail polishes are like some of mine, they get a little gummy and stringy, so slow and steady wins this race. Once you’re done admiring your first masterpiece, go ahead and do the other four nails. Once you’re finished, seal up your artwork with a clear topcoat and frame those beauties for the entire world to see…well at least your Instagram followers. Am I right?
