By Ciara LeRoy Perusing the halls of an art museum is one of my favorite ways to spend an afternoon, but the worst part of visiting a museum is leaving those amazing works behind. So instead of resorting to a life of crime and planning an epic art heist, I decided to carry my favorite artists around in a more respectable way – nail art. In every installment of “Mani Museum,” I’m going to show you how to create gallery-worthy nails that will impress even the crankiest of museum security guards. Years ago, when I first discovered the highly detailed yet organic work of Chuck Close, I was hooked. Close creates jaw-dropping portraits using massive grids of small squares that contain contrasting rings of color. We’re going to use his technique of layering rings of color to create today’s look. The great thing about Close’s work is how seemingly random the color choices can be within the squares. Because of this, pretty much any combination of colors you choose will look great. I went with a more muted, spring palette, featuring lots of greens, with a pop of lilac and coral. To mimic canvas, I decided to go with a nude base coat. For your first “ring,” paint a simple “blob” in any color on the base coat. Try not to make perfect squares or rectangles. You want this to look organic. After that first ring dries, lay down another layer in a contrasting color. Repeat until you have four rings, and voila, you’ve got Chuck Close nails. Now, have fun with it! To make it my own, I added some black and white accent blobs for a fun graphic pop. Hope this gives you just the right dose of fine art inspiration for your manicure.
