By Claire FitzSimmonds Here’s a real throwback: Remember Mary and Wilson from 7th Heaven? And what about Seth and Summer? And yes, I KNOW, I hear you, Rachel and Ross. There are a lot of great couples to choose from, but for my top five, I went for some a little more off the beaten list. Jin and Sun – Lost When we first meet Jin and Sun, we pretty much hate Jin and feel condescending pity for Sun. They’re portrayed as the cliché Asian union – the husband totally in charge, the wife submissive and possibly afraid. Through flashbacks, we learn that they used to have a great relationship and when we met them they were in the rough middle of their story. And I firmly believe that you should never judge a character for the middle of their story. Towards the end of the show, Jin and Sun fall back in love. They learn how to be honest and respectful with each other and eventually remember why they got together in the first place. Pretty simple. Pretty realistic. Especially considering they were trapped on a magical island while all this was happening. Shawn and Angela – Boy Meets World Is it blasphemy not to pick Cory and Topanga? What about their enduring love and crazy hair?! After all, they gave us hope we could end up with our high school (or middle school) sweetheart. But if Cory and Topanga were the daydream, Shawn and Angela were the reality. They dated, broke up, got back together and broke up again – this time for good. Hey, it’s college. You have to get back together once or twice, just to be sure. It doesn’t mean you’re meant to be. Shawn and Angela did away with false hope. They said, “Sorry kid, sometimes when you’re dumped, you’re dumped.” Maggie and Glenn – The Walking Dead I wanted to do one couple from a current show, and Maggie and Glenn were the obvious choice. It seems like they’re from pretty different backgrounds – Maggie was off at college when the apocalypse started; Glenn was delivering pizzas. Maggie’s from a conservative family, and there’s no indication Glenn is. We don’t know a ton of details, so I could be reading it wrong, but it seems unlikely the two would have gotten together had the world not completely fallen apart. That’s how the whole show is anyway, relationships that never would have happened had everyone been allowed to continue about their normal lives. Since The Walking Dead is still on the air, I’m not going to give any spoilers. I’ll just say a fun hobby is imagining who you might end up with if the zombie apocalypse happened tomorrow. And also, I waited on Steven Yeun (Glenn) at my restaurant several months ago, and he was super nice. April and Andy – Parks and Recreation April and Andy could not be more different from each other. Andy is goofy and tends towards liking everyone while April is snarky and committed to hating everyone. They have their conflicts, but they never look at each other and ask, “Why are we together?” I’m not saying it’s never a good idea to ask ourselves why we’re with the person we’re with, but there’s something to be said for loving someone just because you do and not worrying too much about if it makes sense. April and Andy demolish the idea that being in love means being the same. Oz and Willow – Buffy the Vampire Slayer I didn’t realize how much I adored this couple until they broke up. I’d like to think something was going on in my real life that contributed to the water works because I’m usually not one to bawl over fictional characters. Or maybe Oz and Willow were really just that great. Considering Buffy’s drama with all her various boys and vampires, Oz and Willow were a nice contrast. They weren’t picture perfect. They hurt each other plenty of times, but they were always sweet to each other in the end. As they were breaking up, they were telling each other how much they loved each other.
“I feel like some part of me will always be waiting for you,” Willow said. “Like if I’m old and blue-haired, and I turn the corner in Istanbul and there you are, I won’t be surprised. Because…you’re with me, you know?” I think a lot of us have felt that way about someone. Like even if we don’t end up with him, he’ll always be the most important person we’ve ever known. It’s not usually true in the end, but it’s beautiful in the moment. --- I’m getting teary-eyed. I’ve gotta stop talking about it. Who are your favorites?

Claire, you know I love this list because of my deep love of BtVS and anything Willow. But I also love Jin and Sun and omggg, April and Andy, obviously. April might be one of my favorite TV characters of all time.
