Ode to the Folks Smokin’ Green Outside the Colorado State Capitol on 4/20
By Lauren Liggett
Megan James’s voice gives me goosebumps! I loved “Shrines”, and “begin again” is an impressive album that avoids the cliche “sophomore slump” that young bands often experience. Her ethereal vocals mixed with Corin Roddick’s electronic beats make my ears happy. 2. Never Catch Me (f/Kendrick Lamar) - Flying Lotus (You’re Dead!) This funky, driving beat with Lamar’s edgy vocals just make me want to do that thing where I’m bobbing my head and moving my hips side-to-side while the rest of my body is perfectly still. It feels cooler than it looks, I would imagine. 3. Collarbone - Fujiya & Miyagi (Transparent Things) This song is the adult version of “Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes”. “Toebone connected to the anklebone anklebone connected to the shinbone shinbone connected to the kneebone kneebone connected to the thighbone thighbone connected to the hipbone hipbone connected to the backbone backbone connected to the collarbone collarbone connected to the neckbone neckbone connected to the headbone" … and so on. 4. Flutes - Hot Chip (In Our Heads) Every few months, I remember my Hot Chip obsession. This happened recently, and now I just want to listen to “Flutes” while racing to the top of a mountain (in a car, obvi). 5. No Bueno - Angel Haze (No Bueno) The video for this song is raw and touching. I love Angel Haze for their* honest, brave lyrics and attitude. Also for dating Ireland Baldwin and being one of the cutest Instagram couples (unless they broke up? and in that case, please let me go cry for a minute)… 6. honeycake - Butterfly Bones (Pretty Feelings) Apparently this band hasn’t made music since 2009, but Spotify recommended them to me the other day, and I was into it. I’m also a big fan of their song “ur hott”. They made cute, sunny songs for top-down spring days. 7. Smooth Criminal - Tony Succar, Jean Rodriguez (Unity: The Latin Tribute to Michael Jackson) To be honest: Spotify had this album featured on the front page. I LOLed and decided it was too amusing not to include on this silly playlist. “Smooth Criminal” with a Latin lover twist is just too good not to share. Sure to be appreciated by Capitol Hill stoners. 8. Werewolf Gimmick - the Mountain Goats (Beat the Champ) My favorite band IN THE WORLD made a new album that came out April 7, AND I FLIPPED OUT AND IMMEDIATELY WENT OUT AND BOUGHT THE DELUXE EDITION ON VINYL, DUH. John Darnielle’s superb lyricism mixed with Jon Wurster’s driving drum beats and Peter Peter Hughes’s boisterous bass make me want to jump up and down and thrash around and generally act like a 16-year-old at a hardcore show. And that’s ok. I’m never disappointed by tMG, whether I’m listening to early ‘90s tape recordings or their more current, beautifully produced mixes. JD’s heart and soul shine through, no matter the medium. Side note: his first novel, “Wolf in White Van”, released in late 2014, is a complicated, disturbing, beautiful gem, and I can’t wait to read it again. 9. Ankle Injuries - Fujiya & Miyagi (Transparent Things) Also from Fujiya & Miyagi’s 2006 release, Transparent Things, this is a great zone-out-and-just-listen piece. Simple, building beats and subtle vocals. About it. 10. Heavy Metal and Reflective - Azealia Banks (Broke with Expensive Taste) I know she says some dumb shit on Twitter. I don’t care. This jam gets me going 100% of the time. Like, LET’S DRIVE REALLY FAST TO THE HARDWARE STORE AND BUY SUPPLIES TO BUILD AN EARTHSHIP, MAN! 11. I Want to Be Well - Sufjan Stevens (The Age of Adz) Sort of an abrupt transition? I think Sufjan can hang with Azealia, though. Especially with this song, which somehow always brings a tear or more to my eye. The slow, strong build-up is incredible; his lyrics are touching and bold; the changes in tempo and style are beautifully challenging. I probably should have included something from his newest release, “Carrie & Lowell”, but you know… I connect with this. 12. Woof Woof - Dan Deacon (Bromst) Best enjoyed while viewing CorgiOrgy.com (it is the background theme for the site): if you’re at work, I recommend headphones. You’re welcome for the corgi trip. 13. Forrest Gump - Frank Ocean (channel ORANGE) Just try not to sing along to this song; I DARE YOU. 14. Applause (Purity Ring remix) - Lady Gaga (Applause [Remixes]) OKAY PURITY RING REMIXED A LADY GAGA SONG THAT IS ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW. *Angel Haze has noted online that they prefer to use gender-neutral pronouns vs. traditional feminine pronouns.
