girl-ish
By Cassandra Ernst It’s that time of year again . . . but whether you prefer to spend your Holiday season sitting with your family, drinking hot cocoa or being out with your friends with something a little harder (am I the only person obsessed with cinnamon-infused bourbon?), we can help you find the perfect Holiday style. Scenario One: The Work-Related Party Whether your work a steady job or independently, there is going to be some networking event that expects you to show up, donate a toy, and try to impress the very people you’re rushing to take a break from. It may be tempting to skip this party, but this event is crucial. After all, promotions often have more to do with who you know and there is no better way to get to know others than over a celebratory glass of wine. A little word of advice though, stick to two glasses. This is a time to loosen up, but you don’t want to be known as the girl who decided to steal the microphone and stumbled over the lyrics of Christina Aguilera’s “Beautiful”. And as for what to wear . . . don’t be afraid showcase a bit of your style. Yes, your dress should be on the professional side, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still be a knock-out. My personal pick is – Laundry, which I bought at Nordstrom Rack for $50. This dress is conservative . . . hits just above the knee and covers my chest . . . but decidedly sexy, which is what makes it perfect for the any work-related party where you’re looking to impress. Best of all, it’s covered in lace, which is one of my favorite go-to styles. My advice to you is to find a dress with a similar spirit that fits one of your go-to styles—and pair of black or nude heels—not too high!—and simple jewelry. Scenario Two: Your Friends’ Ugly Sweater Party This should be a simple answer. Go to the Goodwill, pick up an ugly sweater. Done. But it took me quite a few trips to quite a few thrift shops before I found the perfect ugly sweater. A sweater that is both ugly, but one that I also adore. I think it has something to do with my love for over-sized sweaters paired with leggings. I bought this for four dollars at a thrift store. And while it may be tempting to get rid of it the moment the Holiday season is through, hold onto it for a couple of years, at least. It will save you a few dollars in the long-run and if you hate repeating the same look, you can add more accessories on top. Scenario Three: The Family Dinner Your extended family is getting together to celebrate the holidays and despite the fact that you’re well into your twenties, your great-aunt is still trying to stick you at the kid’s table. And yes, the kids table can be infinitely more fun, but you made a side-dish and everything this year. You’re ready to step it up. For this scenario, you want to look casual, but still stylish. As much as I love my ripped skinny jeans, if you’re looking for a more mature look, I suggest you try on some dark-wash jeans with a pair of nice flats. I bought my dark-wash Levis jeans at Kohl’s. Trade in your usual t-shirt for a blouse or sweater and suddenly you’ll be upgraded to the adult table, with all the talk of child-rearing and marriage and lackluster careers that come with it. Scenario Four: The New Year’s Eve Party Don’t wear that skirt! At least if you plan on getting wasted. I know what you’re thinking, because that skirt looks incredibly sexy on you. But do you know what happens to drunk girls in short skirts? They find a dozen pictures of said skirt half-way up their ass. Do wear the heels! Just spend a half day breaking them in first so you don’t start hating yourself after the first hour into the night. Heels make your ass and legs look better and by some magic, they improve your dance skills. Or is that just for me? The entire package matters! I have certain rules I stick to when going out. One of my standbys is boobs or legs, never both. You may have a cute top or the perfect shoes or skirt, but that doesn’t mean they all look great together. Try on different combinations until you find the perfect look. For me, a perfect look would include: J. Lo faux leather shorts, which I bought on clearance for $12 dollars at Kohl’s, Rock and Republic knee-high heels, which I bought for $30 dollars at Kohl’s, and a cute top. Oh, and it never hurts to find a cute guy to kiss at the end of the night.
What outfits will you be wearing this Holiday Season?
